A new chapter of Stroud’s Subscription Rooms has begun.
On 28th March 2019 Stroud District Council transferred the building to Stroud Town Council and the business and staff to the Stroud Subscription Rooms Trust.
The Town Mayor is calling on the community to get behind and fully support the Trust who will be responsible for running the Sub Rooms.
“Now the hard work really begins,” says Town Mayor Kevin Cranston. “Public opinion has been overwhelming in its call to keep the Subs in public ownership.
“But to ensure that happens it needs to become a viable enterprise, backed by the community. The Town Council has found a great team of Trust members and has confidence in their ability to make a success of the Subs and so is happy to take on the risk of ownership with no income.
“It has taken nearly 2 years of hard work to get us to this solution which gives the Sub Rooms a secure and bright future and frees the District Council from the long term liabilities of running costs and losses.”
The Stroud Subscription Rooms Trust, which has been set up as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, will be responsible for running the Sub Rooms, while Stroud Town Council maintains public ownership of the building. The staff transferred to the Trust when they took over.
Stroud District Council have provided a grant of £230,000 and the Town Council £50,000 as working capital. The Trust also plans to raise funds to make improvements to the building.
The Town Council has already received more than £50,000 in community pledges which will be needed in the near future. Make your donation here.
Stroud Preservation Trust has also committed £10,000 towards the cost of employing an architect and submitting a listed building application.
