Stroud Town Council is supporting a call by county councillor Sarah Lunnon to cut the speed limit.
“At 20mph communities feel safer as streets become less hostile,” Cllr Lunnon told Stroud town councillors.
“Walking and cycling become more pleasurable activities and drivers find it easier to stop and give way to pedestrians.”
She said the highway team at Gloucestershire County Council were supportive of community requests for 20mph zones.
Town councillors agreed to set up a task group to look at the details of introducing a 20mph restriction.
Town councillor Ben Spencer said research showed that by there were also pollution, climate change and air quality benefits to blanket limit.
