Now, following an approach by several residents and the local ramblers groups we have agreed to help pursue an application for Stroud to become a Walkers Are Welcome Town.
There are currently 52 towns and villages across the UK with Walkers are Welcome status. It is seen as helping strengthen a town’s reputation as a place for visitors to come to enjoy the outdoors, bringing useful benefits to the local economy. It helps to ensure that footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained in good condition, benefiting local people as well as visitors.
The Town Council has set aside funds through its footpaths budget to support walking in the town. In endorsing the application the council is also helping to collect the 250 signatures needed to demonstrate that the idea has community backing. Copies of the petition can be signed in the Town Council office in London Road.
