As reported in the local media, we are very disappointed, if not totally surprised, about the announcement. Our detailed objection document produced during the six-week ‘public consultation’ period outlined clearly why the closure of Uplands would break the government’s Access Criteria.
‘We always feared the consultation exercise was a sham,’ said Cllr Andy Read, who compiled the document. ‘The fact Post Office Limited can just brush aside the detailed concerns raised by us and many hundreds of other objectors, will suggest to many people that their minds were already made up.’
‘We have made it clear that Stroud Town Council will do everything it can to save the vital Uplands facility, including providing the necessary funding.’
‘Uplands Post Office is profitable and popular, and the town council is preparred to provide the necessary funding to ensure it does not cost Post Office Ltd a single penny to keep it open,’ said Cllr Read. ‘However, so far Post Office Limited has refused to even meet us to discuss a possible rescue package.’
